Where to Inject
Ozempic is injected subcutaneously (under the skin, not into muscle). The three approved injection sites are:
- Abdomen — at least 2 inches away from the belly button (most popular)
- Upper thigh — front or outer area
- Upper arm — outer area (may need help reaching)
Rotate injection sites each week to prevent skin buildup (lipohypertrophy).
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Check the pen — make sure the liquid is clear and colorless. Don't use if cloudy or discolored.
- Attach a new needle — remove the paper tab, push the needle onto the pen, and twist until secure. Remove both needle caps.
- Prime the pen (first use only) — turn the dose selector to the flow check symbol, hold pen up, press button until a drop appears.
- Select your dose — turn the dose selector to your prescribed dose (0.25mg, 0.5mg, or 1mg).
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
- Pinch the skin gently with two fingers.
- Insert the needle at a 90° angle (or 45° if you're very lean).
- Press the button slowly and hold for 6 seconds to ensure full dose delivery.
- Remove the needle, recap it, and dispose in a sharps container.
Tips to Reduce Pain
- Let the pen warm to room temperature for 30 minutes before injecting
- Use a new needle every time — dull needles hurt more
- Inject slowly and steadily
- Relax the muscle — tensing makes it worse
- Ice the area for 30 seconds beforehand if very sensitive
Storage
Unused pens: refrigerate at 36–46°F. In-use pens: can be stored at room temperature (up to 77°F) for up to 56 days. Never freeze. Keep away from light and heat.
